Why I choose this presentation and article is because that the main point of learning things about translation should begin from the core of it. To make good translations we should first know what a translation is and what is should like, and also where we should begin and what we should consider while translating a text. The significance of this presentation was that Tuna mentioned the main points of translation in her presentation. The things about what I changed my mind about translation was that I thought that I can just translate the words and the order of the words and nothing is important other than translating right. But thanks to Tuna’s translation I learned that we should consider the equivalence, too. In my further translations I will definitely use these clues.
In this presentation, Tuna mainly mentioned what translation is. She also gave some different definitions of translation that are from her article. To give an example: “As an inevitable consequence of it is the notion of translation loss, the fact that in translation not everything can be “carried across”. “ Why translating a text the term equivalence is important, and she mentioned in her presentation to make equivalence translations, we should consider, phonology, morphemes and semantics while translating. Moreover, she said in her presentation that translation is a good transition between the languages. Translation should have to communicate between languages. Also a translator should considers that the meaning of the text, emotions, intentions and thoughts of the text.
Tuna also mentioned the differences between sentence and utterance and also what a text and discourse is in her presentation.
Before this presentation it was hard for me to tell the differences between those.
The most important thing in her presentation was the upshot of Catford’s theory of situational equivalence in translation. It is a series of choices about what to include and exclude.

The presentation made by Meryem Luleci.
Presentation topic: The problems of translation and translators in Turkey.
Why I choose this presentation and article is because it is important to know the translation and translators problems in our own country. Maybe knowing the problems in our own country can bring us to good solutions for them. The significance of this presentation was that Meryem asked the question are translators machines? Before this presentation I was somehow thinking like that and being a translator just knew the words in different languages to me. I changed my mind definitely about this point.
In this presentation Meryem mainly discussed if translators are machines or not? And what the role of translators is in Turkey. She gives an example of her article authors word of Ulker Ince “The word translation makes translator a machine. This word makes translator just a worker who serves for the sake of others. Turkish society tries to deactivate the translators’ position on issues.” The most important point in her translation was that she mentioned about the past translators and nowadays translators big difference. Meryem said that translators did their best in the past but nowadays they are just producing unreadable productions.
Meryem also mentioned that teaching the theory of translation science is a key role. This is not enough to produce good work. They need to work a lot to take an important role in society. This was the point that I learned new from her presentation. However one important thing that all of the translators should know and that I learned from her presentation is that “Translation is not just translate a text by using exact words meaning”, “Translation should reflect the feeling of the text”. She also mentioned another person’s ideas from her article, “Mehmet Morali” he says that “Even the writer is very good if the translation is bad you do not like the book. You do not want to read it”. This was also a nice part that she mentioned. In my opinion that’s right for example Orhan Pamuk’s books are translated and gained really good prizes in the world. This was especially because it was translated very well.
